Call for Papers
Theme
The conference centres on the question of how education contributes to immigrant integration in terms of becoming part of a society. Education plays a crucial part in integration processes among immigrants and non-immigrants. Education relates to knowledge and skills, certificates as well as socialised values and behavioural patterns that facilitate integration in regard to different fields including labour market integration and integration into social relations and networks. Integration is an important prerequisite for wellbeing. Research issues to be discussed at the conference include the questions of how and why educational attainment and status attainment differ between immigrants and non-immigrants, how educational attainment affects life chances (such as labour market chances, subjective well-being, health, political participation) among immigrants and non-immigrants, and how institutional settings of education and social systems (welfare state, immigration regimes) affect these mechanisms of inequality? A main feature of the conference is the explicit consideration of the heterogeneity among the immigrant population with differences structured along characteristics such as social origin and gender, immigrant generation (e.g., first and second generation), migratory status (e.g., refugee status, migrant worker), citizenship (e.g., of country of origin, of destination country, stateless status), migration reason (e.g., political refugees versus economic immigrants), country of origin and country of destination. The conference is dedicated to the discussion of latest and classical immigration research regarding conceptual frameworks, methodological designs, empirical analyses, and policy implications.
